Dike (Deich)
An embankment built to hold water back from fields and towns. On this site it also means the raised path you walk or ride. The crown is usually drier than the meadow behind it.

These definitions match how the words are used on troncard pages about Steinhuder Meer, Dümmer See, the Weser meadows and dike cycling.
Reed belt
A fringe of Phragmites and related plants between open water and firm ground. It shelters birds, softens waves and is often closed to boats. See wildlife notes.
Floodplain / flood meadow
Land beside a river that is meant to take overflow. Grass may stand under water after rain. Cattle leave; geese arrive. Core landscape of the Weser chapter.
Fetch
The distance wind can travel over open water. On Steinhuder Meer a long fetch builds waves that feel coastal even though the map is inland.
Ramsar / nature park
Labels for wetland importance and managed recreation. They explain closed reed zones and why quiet watching beats shortcuts through vegetation.
Regional rail (Regionalbahn / RE)
Local and regional trains that stitch Wunstorf, Nienburg, Diepholz and other hinges into the five-day itinerary. Bike tickets are separate capacity.
Oak island
A grove or woodland patch rising from meadow country, as around Rehburg-Loccum. Not a literal island in water, but an island of canopy in a sea of grass.
Hide
A screened shelter for watching birds. On these lakes you often simply use the dike. Entering a reed without a hide is usually the wrong move.

More field vocabulary
A polder is land reclaimed or protected by dikes; you meet the idea whenever a meadow sits below the path you ride. Shallow water / shallows are the lake margins where light hits the bed and boats are often restricted. Boardwalk is a timber path over wet ground, typical of reed edges near Steinhude. Weserradweg is the long-distance cycle route along the Weser; this guidebook only uses the Lower Saxony floodplain stretch. Nature park zoning divides quiet reed from promenade; the map at the lake is more binding than a blog. Regional bus fills the last kilometres after the train; Sunday services thin out, which is why the five-day walk leans on rail hubs. Windward / leeward matter more than elevation: start a loop into the wind so the tired legs get the gift. High-water mark is the stain or gauge that tells you whether yesterday’s rain is still in the field. Learn those eight ideas and the rest of the site reads as a single country rather than a list of towns.
